BALIS, DANIEL E. (?-?). Daniel E. Balis (Bayles, Bayless) was a partner of Isaac Van Dorn as one of Stephen F. Austin's Old Three Hundred families. In October 1824 Balis was living in the San Jacinto area when he nominated Dr. Johnson C. Hunter as the surveyor for the vicinity. In March 1826 he worked for Austin as a hand on the boat Mexican. His title to a sitio of land now in Matagorda County was granted on April 14, 1828. Balis lived in Washington County at or near Chapel Hill. He died before 1837, when his estate was settled.
