BAUER, PAUL (1855–1934). Paul Bauer, saddlemaker, son of Friederick and Matilda (Ehrenberg) Bauer, was born on October 30, 1855, at Yorktown, Texas, where his father, a German immigrant and master saddler, taught him the saddle and harness business. He moved successively to Helena, San Diego, Pearsall, Oakville, and, in 1895, to Beeville. In 1878 he married Carrie Reagan, and of their six children, two sons continued in the saddle business. For nearly 100 years the Bauers made saddles for cattlemen, Texas Rangersqv, sheriffs, and law enforcement officers throughout Texas, other states, Mexico, and South America. J. Frank Dobie was particularly fond of the Bauer saddle. In 1890 Bauer was justice of the peace in Live Oak County. He was in partnership with a son until his death. He died on October 28, 1934, and was buried in Beeville.
