BAGBY, GEORGE H. (ca. 1805-1863). George H. Bagby, soldier and legislator, was born in Virginia about 1805 to Daniel and Lucy Bagby. In 1833 he and his wife, Margaret (Latimer), came to Texas, settled in Clarksville, and became charter members of Clarksville's old Presbyterian church. Bagby enlisted in the Texas army as a private in Capt. William Becknell's^qv company on July 16, 1836, and was discharged on October 16. He served as Red River county clerk from 1854 to 1856 and represented the county at the Secession Convention^qv in 1861. Though he only participated in the Adjourned Session, he signed the Ordinance of Secession. He was later a member of the House in the Ninth State Legislature (1861-62). Bagby enlisted in the Confederate Army but was discharged from active duty because of his old age. He later served as paymaster and traveled in 1863 Arkansas to pay the Texas troops. On the return trip through Indian Territory he was attacked and killed by Indians.
