BREEDING, JOHN V. (1807-1869). John V. Breeding, early settler, soldier, and sheriff, was born on October 16, 1807, in Virginia and came to Texas with his parents David W. and Sarah (Davis) Breeding in February 1833. He was in the Ranging Corps from November 24, 1835, to September 13, 1836. He served in the Texas army from February 1 to May 10, 1836, and was in Capt. William J. E. Heard's^qv company under Sam Houston^qv in the San Jacinto campaign, although he did not participate in the battle. Breeding received a bounty warrant for 320 acres for service from February 1 to May 10, 1836, and a donation certificate for 640 acres for being on the baggage detail at San Jacinto. He was the first sheriff of Fayette County after its organization in 1838 and also served under Col. John Henry Moore^qv on a campaign against the Comanche Indians from September to November 1840. In 1840, for tax purposes, he declared title to 380 acres with 738 under survey, two town lots at La Grange, one gold watch, ten cattle, and two saddle horses. Breeding married Louisa Parks Ware on February 10, 1842, in Colorado County, and they had eight children. He died in 1869 in Fayette County and was buried in the Breeding family cemetery near Fayetteville.
