BRIGGS, CLAY STONE (1876–1933). Clay Stone Briggs, lawyer, judge, and congressman, the son of George Dempster and Olive (Branch) Briggs, was born in Galveston, Texas, on January 6, 1876. After attending the University of Texas, Harvard University, and the law department of Yale University, he was admitted to the bar in 1899 and began to practice in Galveston. He was a member of the Texas House of Representatives in the Thirtieth Legislature and served as judge of the Tenth Judicial District of Texas from 1909 until 1919. That year he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Congress, where he served until his death from a heart attack in his Washington apartment on April 29, 1933. Judge Briggs was survived by his second wife, the former Mrs. Lois Slayton Woodworth, and their two children. He was buried in Syracuse, New York.
