BROOKS, CARRIE JANE SUTTON (1903-1964). Carrie Jane Sutton Brooks, black physician, was born in San Antonio, Texas, in 1903. She graduated from Riverside High School as valedictorian, after which she entered Howard University. There she was president of the Alpha chapter of Delta Sigma Theta sorority for one term and received her medical degree in the 1920s. She was among the first black interns at Freedman's Hospital in Washington, D.C. Dr. Brooks practiced medicine for a few years in San Antonio, specializing in women and children, and helped establish the first YWCA branch for blacks there. She married a physician, John Hunter Brooks, and they both practiced medicine in New Jersey until her health failed. She died in January 1964.
