BUCKNER, THOMAS ADDISON (1873-1950). Thomas Addison Buckner, newspaperman and civic leader, was born in Bandera County, Texas, on December 24, 1873, the second son of Thomas L. and Martha (Buckelew) Buckner. He married one of his pupils, Harriet Caroline Mayfield, in 1892. During the early years of their marriage he taught school, was justice of the peace in Bandera, and was deputy district and county clerk of Bandera County, where both his grandfather and his father had served as county officials. Buckner began his newspaper career in the office of the Bandera Enterprise about 1896 and later owned the newspaper. Subsequently, he owned or managed newspapers at Comfort, Center Point, Ozona, Kerrville, and San Marcos, where he operated the San Marcos Record from 1921 until his death. His two sons purchased interests in the paper in 1922 and 1932. Buckner also had two daughters. He was a Baptist and a member of the Texas Press Association, which he served as director on several occasions, as well as the Texas Editorial Association. He was an early president of the local Kiwanis Club. While the San Marcos Record was under his management, Buckner received many awards for excellence. He died on January 23, 1950.
