BUTLER, TEXAS (Bastrop County). Butler, five miles southeast of Elgin in northern Bastrop County, was established with the coming of the Texas and New Orleans Railroad in 1871. However, the small railroad community never developed enough to establish a post office or, apparently, to have population figures recorded until the 1930s. The estimated population through the 1930s and 1940s stood at 107, then rose to 150 in the late 1940s. It remained at this number till the late 1960s. In the mid-1980s the settlement was still listed as a community.
