BETHEL, TEXAS (Henderson County). Bethel is on State Highway 19 six miles north of Athens in north central Henderson County. The settlement was evidently founded around the time of the Civil War. In the mid-1930s it had a church, a school, and a number of houses. After World War II the school closed, and in the early 1990s only a church, a cemetery, and a few houses remained. In 2000 the population was twenty-five.
