BAYOU, TEXAS (Sabine County). Bayou was nine miles southeast of Hemphill in southeastern Sabine County. The settlement received a post office in 1908 and had one rated business and a population estimated at thirty in 1933. The post office was closed in the late 1930s, but there is no evidence that the population had declined. In 1946 Bayou comprised a school, a business, and a population estimated at thirty. By 1955, however, the school district had been consolidated with that of Hemphill. The site of Bayou was inundated by Toledo Bend Reservoir, which became operational in 1968.
