BAYOU, TEXAS (San Patricio County). Bayou, between San Patricio and Mathis on a bayou that drained an area of fertile San Patricio County land, was settled in the post-Civil War period. Thomas Bernard Magowan settled on a farm on the bayou in 1876, and other families followed until perhaps a dozen lived in the area. The community had its own school, administered by the schools of San Patricio, and the loose community of families considered themselves a settlement apart from San Patricio. The later history of Bayou is unknown; most of its area is now ranchland.
