BACHELOR PRONG OF HORDS CREEK. The Bachelor Prong of Hords Creek rises four miles south of Novice and six miles west of U.S. Highway 84 in northwestern Coleman County (at 31°56' N, 99°36' W) and runs eleven miles southeast to its mouth on Hords Creek, two miles west of Coleman (at 31°51' N, 99°28' W). It crosses an area of steep slopes and benches surfaced by shallow clay loams that support juniper, live oak, mesquite, and grasses; the lower reaches of the creek traverse a flat, flood-prone area with local shallow depressions, surfaced by clay and sandy loams that support water-tolerant hardwoods, conifers, and grasses.
