CATTLEMAN. The Cattleman, the official publication of the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association,^qv is a widely read beef-cattle journal. In June 1914 the twenty-four-page premier issue of this monthly magazine was published in Fort Worth, Texas. In its first year the Cattleman reached 2,905 subscribers; in 1994 the magazine was almost nine times its original size, with 200-page monthly issues and an average total paid circulation of 20,500. About two-thirds of the subscribers are members of TSCRA. Readers live in every state and more than forty foreign countries and include commercial cattlemen, producers of purebred seed-stock, cattle feeders, and horsemen. As a whole, they owned or managed a total of 9.8 million cattle on 93.7 million acres of land in 1985. The magazine is nonpartisan and deals with issues of importance to the livestock industry, such as commercial ranch operations, cattle breeding and feeding, range and pasture management, and profit tips. Issues of the Cattleman frequently, but not always, focus on a particular breed of cattle. In those instances, there is usually a photo of the featured breed on the front cover, a principal article on the breed, and an advertising section especially for breeders of the featured breed. In December, the Cattleman publishes an issue devoted to the cattle industry in Mexico. Articles are written in both Spanish and English.
