CALOHAN, WILLIAM LAWRENCE (1867-1932). W. Lawrence (Lod) Calohan, cattle inspector, was born in Blanco County, Texas, in 1867, one of five children of William S. and Vibella (McCrocklin) Calohan. He began herding cattle in Southwest Texas and made his first cattle drive to Abilene, Kansas, for the Blocker Ranch. In 1892 he was employed as cattle inspector by the Texas Cattle Raisers Association (later the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Associationqv), first at Midland and Fort Worth and after 1909 at Kansas City, Missouri. He was said to have "carried more than 15,000 cattle brands in his head." As brand inspector of the association, he was able to recognize on sight 2,700 brands of members from Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, Montana, and Wyoming. In 1918 he became chief inspector for the cattlemen's association at Kansas City. He married Sarah Alpha Grammer, and they had two children. He died in Kansas City from heat prostration on July 11, 1932.
