CÁRDENAS Y MAGAÑA, MANUEL DE (?-?). Manuel José de Cárdenas y Magaña, a skillful engineer who had built the prison and fort of San Juan de Ulloa in Veracruz, was ordered to accompany Francisco de Llanos on the Llanos-Cárdenas expeditionqv up the coast from Veracruz in 1690, for the purposes of finding out whether the rivers of the Texas coast were navigable and of locating Fort St. Louis.qv They reached Cavallo Passqv on October 24, 1690, and were back in Veracruz on December 9.
