CÁRDENAS Y MAGAÑA, MANUEL DE (?-?). Manuel José de Cárdenas y Magaña, a skillful engineer who had built the prison and fort of San Juan de Ulloa in Veracruz, was ordered to accompany Francisco de Llanos on the Llanos-Cárdenas expedition^qv up the coast from Veracruz in 1690, for the purposes of finding out whether the rivers of the Texas coast were navigable and of locating Fort St. Louis.^qv They reached Cavallo Pass^qv on October 24, 1690, and were back in Veracruz on December 9.
