CLAMPITT, SUSANAH GRAVES (1781-1868). Susanah Clampitt, an early pioneer of Stephen F. Austin's second colony, was born on March 27, 1781, in Essex County, Virginia, and married Nathan Arnett Clampitt in Davidson County, Tennessee, on September 1, 1803. During their years farming in Wilson County, Tennessee, Susanah bore seven children. After Nathan's death in 1823, she moved to Texas in 1825 with her oldest son, Ezekiel Clampitt, and his family. She received a Spanish land grant in Washington County, one of the few women to hold a land title in her own name. She settled in Millican, Brazos County, where she married Moses Cummins. In 1841 Mrs. Clampitt gave two of her sons, Nathan and Francis G. Clampitt, 3,333 acres of her original land grant. She died on August 3, 1868.
