CHOKE CANYON STATE PARK. Choke Canyon State Park consists of two units beside the 26,000-acre Choke Canyon Reservoir. The 385-acre South Shore Unit is on State Highway 72 four miles west of Three Rivers in Live Oak County, and the 1,100-acre Calliham Unit is on State Highway 72 eleven miles west of Three Rivers in McMullen County. The park was acquired in 1981 in a fifty-year cooperative agreement among the United States Bureau of Reclamation, the city of Corpus Christi, and the Nueces River Authority. Much of the area is former ranchland and is covered with the brushy scrub typical of South Texas. The abundant wildlife ranges from javelinas and white-tailed deer to Rio Grande turkeys and coyotes. Each unit provides picnic sites, restrooms, showers, a trailer dump station, campsites, a group shelter, a playground, and a boat ramp. The Calliham Unit also has a swimming pool and a hiking trail.
