CENTER, TEXAS (Lubbock County). Center is a farming community on Farm Road 2902 eight miles northeast of New Deal and seven miles southeast of Abernathy (Hale County) in north central Lubbock County. The settlement formed near a school about 1½ miles south of where Center is now located. Around 1925 the school was moved to provide a more central location; it also served as a meeting place for church services. In 1935 Center and three neighboring districts consolidated to create the New Deal Rural School District. The old Center school continued to serve as a meeting place for religious services, but around 1950 it was torn down and replaced with a new church building. The Center church remained active in the 1980s.
