CALF CREEK (Menard County). Calf Creek rises ten miles northeast of Menard in northeastern Menard County (at 31°00' N, 99°39' W) and runs southeast, through the southwestern corner of McCulloch County, to its mouth on the San Saba River, twelve miles west of Katemcy in northwestern Mason County (at 30°55' N, 99°27' W). The surrounding flat to rolling prairie is marked by local deep depressions; the soil varies from shallow and stony to deeper clay loams that support oak, juniper, mesquite, and grasses. James Bowie and ten others fought more than 150 Caddo and Lipan Indians along Calf Creek on November 21, 1831.
