CLAYS CREEK. Clays Creek rises near the Bell county line, a half mile south of Davilla in western Milam County (at 30°46' N, 97°16' W) and runs east for twelve miles to its mouth on the Little River, nine miles west of Cameron (at 30°48' N, 97°08' W). The surrounding rolling to flat terrain with local shallow depressions is surfaced by dark, calcareous clays and sandy loams that support mesquite, cacti, and grasses in the upper reaches of the creek and water-tolerant hardwoods and conifers in the middle and lower reaches. The creek is said to have been named for Nestor Clay, who was wounded in an Indian fight there in 1835.
