COLEMAN LAKE. Coleman Lake, formerly Coleman Reservoir, is on Jim Ned Creek fourteen miles north of Coleman in Coleman County (at 32°02' N, 99°28' W). It is owned and operated by the city of Coleman for municipal water supply. Construction of the 3,200-foot-long earthfill dam, built by the R. N. Adams Construction Company, was started in August 1965 and completed on May 10, 1966; deliberate impoundment began in April 1966. The cost was well over $1 million. The reservoir has a capacity of 40,000 acre-feet with a surface area of 2,000 acres at the service spillway elevation of 1,717.5 feet above mean sea level and a capacity of 59,000 acre-feet with a surface area of 2,530 acres at the emergency spillway crest elevation of 1,726 feet above mean sea level. The drainage area above the dam, part of the Colorado River basin, is 292 square miles.
