DAVENPORT, JOHN G. (?-1838). John G. Davenport, newspaper publisher and judge, moved to Texas in the mid-1830s from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where he had practiced law for some time. He settled in Matagorda County, where he served as chief justice and judge of probate in 1837-38. On June 28, 1838, he purchased the Matagorda Bulletin^qv from John Warren J. Niles. Davenport edited the paper until his death in October 1838.
