DAVENPORT, JOHN G. (?-1838). John G. Davenport, newspaper publisher and judge, moved to Texas in the mid-1830s from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where he had practiced law for some time. He settled in Matagorda County, where he served as chief justice and judge of probate in 1837-38. On June 28, 1838, he purchased the Matagorda Bulletinqv from John Warren J. Niles.
