EDWARDS, GUSTAVUS E. (?-?). Gustavus E. Edwards, member of the Old Three Hundredqv and an early Wharton County settler, came to Texas in 1822. He was a veteran of the War of 1812. His wife died en route to Stephen F. Austin'sqv colony. Edwards received title to a league of land now in Wharton County on August 19, 1824. In 1825 he was operating the Robinson ferry at the site of Washington-on-the-Brazos. He was postmaster at Piney in October 1836. His daughter, Mary Jane, married Robert McAlpin Williamsonqv in Austin County on April 21, 1837. In July 1837 Edwards sold his Austin County farm and moved to his league in Wharton County. He was living at Wharton in 1856, when Williamson died at his home.
