FAULKEY GULLY. Faulkey Gully rises in the Willow Flats area of northwest Harris County (at 30°01' N, 95°39' W) and runs southeast for six miles to its mouth on Cypress Creek, near the intersection of Grant and Jones roads (at 29°59' N, 95°35' W). The stream traverses an area where the coastal prairie begins to yield to woodlands, primarily pine and oak. Area soils are primarily sandy and clay loams. In the post-Civil Warqv years, black freedmen settled along Faulkey Gully in an area known locally as "the Bottoms." The community's cemetery remained 100 years later as the only reminder of the early settlement in an area of rapidly expanding urban development.
