GRAHAM, BERIAH (1804-1879). Beriah Graham, physician and state treasurer, was born in Stokes County, North Carolina, in 1804. The family moved to Russellville, Kentucky, in 1805. After graduating in medicine at Transylvania University, Lexington, Kentucky, and St. Louis Medical College, he moved to Palestine, Texas, in 1846 and later to Austin. In 1859 Governor Sam Houston appointed him superintendent of the State Lunatic Asylum (later Austin State Hospitalqv); Graham was reappointed by governors A. J. Hamilton and E. M. Pease. Governor Edmund J. Davis appointed him state treasurer in 1872. Graham died in Austin on August 25, 1879.
