GAY HILL, TEXAS (Milam County). Gay Hill was on U.S. Highway 79 seven miles west of Rockdale in southern Milam County. The date of its establishment is uncertain, but it is said to have been founded by German settlers. In the 1870s Fritz Voss gave land for a school there. A post office called Fletcher operated at Gay Hill from 1898 to 1904. In 1903 the community had two separate one-teacher schools, one for sixty white students and one for thirteen black students. The Gay Hill schools were consolidated with the Rockdale Independent School District in 1949. In the early twentieth century the community also had a garage, grocery, dance hall, and cotton gin, but they had all closed by the 1930s. The 1988 county highway map showed no evidence of the community.
