GEORGIA ARMY. The Georgia Army was a vigilante group that operated in Montague County for a few days in 1872. It apparently was established to combat general lawlessness, especially widespread cattle and horse thievery by outlaws from Indian Territory. Its members were recruited, for the most part, from southern Montague County. The Georgia Army was organized and led by a man named Williamson from Georgia. The group operated in the county for a week or so, during which time they forced the resignation of the county sheriff and convinced several people suspected of illegal activities to leave the area. Incidents of law breaking reportedly decreased thereafter.
