HILL, WILLIAM WARNER (1807-1862). William Warner Hill, soldier and congressman, was born in 1807 in Pulaski County, Kentucky, and moved to Texas in December 1834. He worked as a horse and mule trader until he joined Capt. George W. Barrett's company on July 20, 1835, as a first lieutenant. On March 1, 1836, he transferred to Company H, First Regiment of Volunteers, under the command of Capt. Joseph Lynch. He assumed command of the company on March 11 but was prevented from participating in the battle of San Jacinto because of illness. He returned to command after the battle and remained until the company was disbanded on May 30, 1836. Hill represented Washington County in the First and Second congresses of the republic in the House of Representatives (1836-38). He married Maria Coles, daughter of John P. Coles, on April 5, 1838. Maria was the first white child born in Washington County. Hill was a member of Independence Masonic Milam Lodge No. 11. He later moved to Burleson County, where he died in 1862.
