HINES, ELBERT (1797-1862). Elbert Hines, early settler, was born on January 12, 1797, in Effingham County, Georgia. He married Mahana Melton in Pike County, Mississippi, on November 5, 1816, and they eventually had eight children. In 1823 the family came to Texas. Hines served as alcalde of the Sabine District in 1826. He petitioned the Mexican government for a grant on three occasions between 1830 and 1835, but none of the petitions was completed. In 1838 he received a first-class headright certificate for a league and a labor of land, which he located in Caldwell County. He died in Sabine County on July 6, 1862, and was buried in the Isaac Low Cemetery near old Sabinetown.
