HUNTSVILLE STATE PARK. Huntsville State Park is west of Interstate Highway 45 and seven miles south of Huntsville in southern Walker County. The reserve was purchased with funds from a $20,000 bond issue approved by county voters in 1937. The park was constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corpsqv under the supervision of the National Park Service and the Texas State Park Board. Huntsville State Park has 3,000 acres of heavily wooded land and a 190-acre lake, Lake Raven, formed by a dam on Prairie and Chinquapin creeks. The park flora and protected fauna comprise numerous species. Park facilities include campsites, restrooms, and picnic units. Recreational activities include swimming, fishing, boating, horseback riding, camping, and hiking. In the early 1990s the park had 500,000 visitors annually.
