HILLTOP LAKES, TEXAS. Hilltop Lakes is an upscale community located off Farm Road 3 about eighteen miles southwest of Centerville in southwestern Leon County. The resort development began by the mid-1960s. Two man-made lakes, Swan Lake and Tonkawa Lake, provided recreational opportunities for residents. In 1970 Hilltop Lakes had a population of 250, and that same year a golf course opened for homeowners and their guests. By the mid-1980s the community received its own post office, and from 1980 through 2000 the population was reported at 300. In addition to numerous recreational amenities, Hilltop Lakes also has its own air strip, police protection, and fire station.
