HUNTSVILLE MALE INSTITUTE. Huntsville Male Institute was chartered on March 16, 1848, when the board of trustees of Huntsville Male and Female Institute separated the male and female departments. Samuel McKinley, superintendent, planned to develop the school into a seminary patterned after northern colleges. It operated until 1850, when it was absorbed into Austin College.
