HACKBERRY CREEK (Edwards County). Hackberry Creek rises two miles south of Rocksprings in central Edwards County (at 30°00' N, 100°11' W) and runs northeast, then east, then south, for a total of eighteen miles to its confluence with the East Prong of the Nueces River, at the Hackberry community (at 29°56' N, 100°00' W); the two streams form the Nueces River at this point. Hackberry Creek is intermittent in its upper reaches. The terrain along the creekbed is flat with local shallow depressions, surfaced by clay and sandy loams that support water-tolerant hardwoods, conifers, and grasses. Away from the creek, the terrain is flat with local deep and dense dissections, surfaced by shallow, stony soils that support oak, juniper, and mesquite.
