HACKBERRY CREEK (Hill County). Hackberry Creek rises two miles west of Itasca in northeastern Hill County (at 32°10' N, 97°11' W) and runs southwest for twenty-four miles to its mouth on Aquilla Lake, ten miles southwest of Hillsboro (at 31°54' N, 97°12' W). The stream originally emptied into Aquilla Creek six miles southwest of Hillsboro, but its course was interrupted by the lake's construction. The local terrain is flat to rolling prairie, variously surfaced by dark, commonly calcareous clays; shallow, stony clay loams; and deep to shallow sandy and clay loams that support mesquite, oak, and juniper trees, as well as cacti, chaparral, and various grasses. The area has served as range and crop land. Among Hackberry Creek's tributaries are Coleman, Lovelace, and Little Hackberry creeks.
