JOURNAL OF TEXAS CATHOLIC HISTORY AND CULTURE. In 1994 the Journal of Texas Catholic History and Culture, the scholarly journal of the Texas Catholic Historical Society,^qv was the only provincial Catholic history journal in the United States. It came into being on March 4, 1987, when the president of the society, Patrick Foley, urged the membership to establish such a publication. Shortly after that, an editorial board was formed with Foley as editor of the new periodical. At its first official meeting, held at the Dripping Springs, Texas, home of L. Tuffly Ellis, the editorial board adopted for the new publication the name Journal of Texas Catholic History and Culture. The first annual volume of the journal appeared in the spring of 1990. Its academic tone, as well as that of future volumes, was enunciated by the late dean of American Catholic historians, Monsignor John Tracy Ellis, who wrote in his introductory essay to the inaugural issue that Texas Catholic history must be set in the broader context of universal church history. Such an approach has been followed by the editors in every volume published since then. Each issue of the journal is made up of several scholarly articles, a number of book reviews, announcements and comments about Catholic history and cultural developments throughout the nation, and notes from the Texas Catholic Historical Society. By 1994 the Journal had won three national awards from the Catholic Press Association of the United States and Canada. The first came in 1992 for its book review section, under the editorship of Thomas W. Jodziewicz of the University of Dallas. In 1993 and 1994 the journal won major awards for its focus on multicultural concerns in the 1992 Columbian Quincentennial volume and for general excellence. In 1994 the editorial board consisted of Foley, Jodziewicz, Jesús F. de la Teja (managing editor), Félix D. Almaráz, Jr., Roy R. Barkley, Hubert J. Miller, E. Victor Niemeyer, Kinga Perzynska (Catholic Archives of Texas^qv archivist), and Rev. Robert Wright, O.M.I. Consulting editors were Gilbert R. Cruz, Sister Dolores Liptak, and Rev. James Talmadge Moore. Brother Richard Daly, C.S.C., coordinated support to the journal from the Texas Catholic Conference and handled all budgetary matters for the publication. The Texas State Council of the Knights of Columbus^qv offered regular help, financial and otherwise.
