JUDSON, GEORGE H. (1823–1902). George H. Judson, lawyer, sheep raiser, and purchasing agent for the Confederacy, was born in 1823 near Woodbury, Connecticut, the son of a farmer. He studied law and moved to East Texas in the 1840s, where he practiced for a time before entering the mercantile business. He moved to New Braunfels, continued in business, and married a Miss Campbell. George Wilkins Kendall, a prosperous sheep raiser, advised Judson to get into the sheep business, and in 1861 Judson moved to a place ten miles from San Antonio, on the Austin road. His neighbors, mostly German, often called upon him for legal advice. During the Civil War he officiated as purchasing agent for the Confederacy and handled thousands of bales of cotton in exchange for supplies for the army. Judson died on August 3, 1902, and was buried in City Cemetery No. 4, San Antonio.
