JONES CREEK (Brazoria County). Jones Creek rises ten miles southwest of Angleton at Clemens State Farm in southwestern Brazoria County (at 29°01' N, 95°30' W) and flows twelve miles southeast, forming Jones Lake just before its mouth on the Gulf Intracoastal Waterwayqv (at 28°53' N, 95°25' W). The original course of the stream has been altered by a channel in its upper reaches. According to the 1936 county highway map, Jones Creek originally flowed into Cedar Lake. The creek is named for Capt. Randal Jones,qv who was involved in the battle of Jones Creek.qv The local terrain is flat and is surfaced by clay and sandy loams that support water-tolerant hardwoods, conifers, and grasses. At the stream's mouth, brackish to saltwater coastal marsh, made up of mud and sand, supports rushes and grasses.
