KIMBELL, GEORGE C. (1803–1836). George C. Kimbell, Alamo defender and officer of the Alamo garrison, was born in 1803. He traveled to Texas from New York in March 1825 and settled in Gonzales, where he owned and operated a hat factory on Water Street in partnership with Almaron Dickinson. He received title to one-quarter sitio of land on November 28, 1831. On June 26, 1832, he married Prudence Nash; they had two children. On February 23, 1836, Kimbell was mustered into the Gonzales Ranging Company of Mounted Volunteers as a lieutenant and commander of the unit. On March 1, 1836, he entered the Alamo with his company and returning members of the Alamo garrison. He took with him fifty-two pounds of coffee from Stephen Smith. Kimbell died in the battle of the Alamo on March 6, 1836. Kimble County is named in his honor.
