LATTIMORE, JOHN COMPERE (1862-1915). John Compere Lattimore, teacher and school superintendent, was born in Marion, Alabama, on March 25, 1862, the son of John Lee and Sarah Catherine (Shivers) Lattimore. He came to Texas with his parents in 1874 and settled in Falls County. He graduated from National Normal College in 1886 and became superintendent of schools in Falls County. He married Lucy Edens on June 20, 1889, and they had four children. Lattimore joined the faculty of Baylor University in 1892 and served first as part of the college-preparatory department and later as professor of mathematics. He received bachelor's (1895) and master's (1896) degrees from Baylor. He became chairman of the faculty at Baylor in 1897 but resigned in 1899 to become superintendent of the Waco school system, a position he held until his death. Lattimore was a deacon in the Baptist Church, served as president of the Texas State Teachers Association^qv in 1899, and was a member of the State Board of Examiners from 1901 to 1905. He died in Waco on March 17, 1915, as a result of injuries sustained in a traffic accident, and was buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Waco.
