LA GRANGE SELECT SCHOOL. La Grange Select School was opened as a school for girls by J. R. Casselman on April 7, 1856. In March 1857 a few boys were admitted, and later that year the school was advertised as coeducational, with the girls' and boys' departments entirely separated. The curriculum included practical subjects of elementary and preparatory schools of the period as well as French, drawing, music, and fine needlework. Tuition for a term of twenty weeks varied from twelve to twenty dollars, with an extra fee for the fine arts. In September 1861 I. B. Allen had charge of the female department and Casselman the male department. The boys' division probably came to an end as a result of the Civil War,^qv for subsequent advertisements mentioned only La Grange Female High School.
