LA MOTA MOUNTAIN. La Mota Mountain is five miles northwest of the Solitario in southeastern Presidio County (at 29°32' N, 103°59' W). Its summit, at an elevation of 5,046 feet above sea level, rises 1,246 feet over Terneros Creek, which runs 1½ miles to its north. La Mota Mountain stands in the Bofecillos Mountains area and consists of volcanic deposits of lava and ash-flow tuff and sedimentary deposits of conglomerates and sandstones. The desert mountain terrain of steep rocky ground is surfaced by loose surface rubble. Local vegetation includes sparse grasses, cacti, and desert shrubs of conifers and oaks. La Mota is Spanish for "the mound."
