MABRY, EVANS (1802-1853). Evans Mabry, physician and legislator, was born in Tennessee in 1802 and moved to Texas in 1838. He was granted a conditional land certificate in Washington County on March 14, 1839, and received an unconditional certificate in Travis County on April 14, 1846. Mabry was a physician and operated the City Hotel in Bastrop. He represented Bastrop County in the House of the Ninth Congress, 1844-45, and of the First Legislature, 1846. In 1846 he was corresponding secretary for the central Democratic committee. From 1851 to 1853 he represented Bastrop in the House of the Fourth Legislature and was a member of the Democratic state convention in Austin in January 1852. On June 18, 1853, Dr. Mabry authorized the Texas State Gazette (see AUSTIN STATE GAZETTE) to withdraw his name from the race for the Senate from Bastrop, Travis, and Burnet counties because his rheumatism was so bad that he was unable to make the canvass. He died late in 1853 and was survived by his wife, Sarah.
