MASON, CHARLES (1812–1883). Charles Mason, soldier in the Texas Revolution, was born in Augusta, Georgia, in 1812, and moved to Texas in 1834. He participated in the battle of Gonzales on October 2, 1835, as a member of Albert Martin's company. Mason was orderly sergeant in Thomas F. L. Parrott's company in November 1835 and served in Henry Teal's company from April 4 to June 23, 1836. He was a private under Andrew Briscoe at the battle of San Jacinto. He married Eveline DeWitt at Houston on April 28, 1838. In December 1838 he was serving as acting Secretary of War for the Republic of Texas. Mason was a member of the Texas Veterans Association. He died at Gonzales in 1883.
