MCCLOSKEY, AUGUSTUS (1878–1950). Augustus McCloskey, lawyer, judge, and politician, was born in San Antonio on September 23, 1878. He attended Atascosa School, St. Joseph's Academy, and St. Mary's College in San Antonio and studied law while working as a stenographer from 1903 to 1907. He was admitted to the bar in San Antonio in 1907 and served as Bexar county judge from 1920 to 1928. In 1927 and 1928 he was president of the Highway Club of Texas and in 1928 was a delegate to the national Democratic convention in Houston. He seemed to have defeated Harry McLeary Wurzbach for Congress in 1928 and served from March 4, 1929, to February 10, 1930, when his opponent replaced McCloskey after successfully contesting the election. McCloskey then returned to law practice in San Antonio, where he served also as judge of the corporation court from January 1943 to July 1947. He died on July 21, 1950, and was buried in San Fernando Cemetery.
