MONTROSE, MARCUS A. (1808-1855). Marcus A. Montrose, minister and educator, was born in 1808 in Scotland, where he attended the University of Edinburgh and was ordained a Presbyterian minister. He immigrated to the United States about 1839 and moved to San Augustine, Texas, in the spring of 1842. He became president of the newly established University of San Augustine and opened the school in September 1842. He advanced the school but caused religious rivalry and resigned in 1845. He served as president of the University of Nacogdoches the following year, of Masonic Collegiate Institute at Fanthorp from 1847 to 1850, and of La Grange Female Institute. He died in Panola in 1855.
