MOUNT ENTERPRISE, TEXAS (Wood County). Mount Enterprise is a rural community on State Highway 37 four miles north of Mineola in Wood County. A Mount Enterprise public school district was established by the state legislature in 1884, and by 1896 the school reported eighty-seven white and forty-five black students. By 1905 the number of students had dropped by nearly half, to forty-nine white and twenty-two black students. During the 1930s the community had a number of scattered dwellings, two businesses, and, as late as 1932, a school, which that year reported fifty-four white students in eight grades and thirty-four black students in seven grades. The discovery in the mid-1940s of the Merigale and Norman Paul oilfields just to the north of the community apparently had no lasting effect on its economy, since by 1960 all that remained at the site was some widely scattered dwellings and the Mount Enterprise Church. The church was also shown on the 1988 county highway map.
