MOUNTAIN VIEW SCHOOL FOR BOYS. The Mountain View School for Boys in Gatesville was established on September 5, 1962, as a facility for chronic, serious offenders previously held at the Gatesville State School for Boys.^qv Administration of the Mountain View school was conducted by the Texas Youth Council (see TEXAS YOUTH COMMISSION) and was separate from other Gatesville facilities. The school was constructed to accommodate 480 inmates; in 1964-65 the average population was 316. In the early 1970s the school became a security treatment facility for dangerous offenders; its average population was seventy in 1973. When the Mountain View school closed in 1975, its inmates were evaluated and reassigned to other facilities. The land and buildings were acquired by the Texas Department of Corrections (see PRISON SYSTEM) and became the Mountain View Unit for Women.
