MITRE PEAK. Mitre Peak is eleven miles southeast of Fort Davis and three miles north of the intersection of the Jeff Davis, Presidio, and Brewster county lines in southeastern Jeff Davis County (at 30°28' N, 103°47' W). It rises to an elevation of 6,190 feet above sea level, some 1,600 feet above Farm Road 1837, one mile to the north. The peak is an intrusive mass exposed by erosion; it stands much taller than the surrounding terrain because it is harder than the eroded rock around it. In the vicinity, shallow, stony soils support scrub brush and grasses. The mountain was named for its resemblance to the peaked hat worn by a bishop.
