NEW WEHDEM, TEXAS. New Wehdem is just off State Highway 36 eight miles northwest of Bellville in northern Austin County. The area was first settled in the second half of the nineteenth century, and by the early 1930s a number of residents from nearby Wehdem had moved into the vicinity. After World War IIqv the locale began to be described on maps as New Wehdem. By 1965 the reported population of the dispersed community had reached 150. Thereafter the number of residents gradually declined, and in the early 1990s the population stood at 100. This New Wehdem is not to be confused with the New Wehdem of the 1890s, which was the original name of Wehdem a few miles to the northwest. The population remained at 100 in 2000.
